EMM, HUKILL, MAUPIN, MENAGER, SAPPINGTON, SMITH, SWAP, WILSON posted by Paul Grisham on Saturday, February 1, 1997
I have a document that lists some Saline County members of the 71st Enrolled Missouri Militia (a Union Regiment). This unit was formed in 1862 and was posted to Lexington, Mo. where it participated in the Lone Jack battle. The document is really a set of letters and orders concerning a Saline County resident and member of the 71st, Claudius J. MENAGER. Mr. Menager was a very unfortunate individual. After being discharged from the 71st EMM for a medical problem (hernia) in late 1862, he had the misfortune of being conscripted by a Col Gordon of Maj Gen Prices Confederate forces during that individual's invasion of Missouri in 1864. Mr. Menager escaped the rebel forces after 8 days in the vicinity of Westport only to be captured by Union forces in Wyandotte County Kansas and sent to a prisoner of war camp in Indiana. The document and affidavits were evidently compiled by Mr. Menager's brother Peter Menager of Leavenworth Kansas and sent to Secretary of War Stanton. The effort was successful and Mr. Menager was released in January of 1865. Some of the names in the documents are Franklin SWAP, CoE 4th Cav EMM, Provost Marshall; W.A. WILSON, Lt Col 71st Regt. EMM; E HUKILL; PE. MAUPIN, Clerk of the Saline County Court; ___ SMITH, Sheriff of Saline Co.; F.M. SAPPINGTON. There are others if you are interested. If possible, I would like to know if there are any descendents of Claudius J. Menager still in Saline Co. or if you know of any doing research on the Menagers as I have a quantity of letters between the Menager brothers and their family in Gallipolis Ohio. I would be happy to turn these letters over to a member of the family.

FARRAR, HANLEY, MARSHALL, MCDANIEL posted by Betsy Thomas on Saturday, March 1, 1997
I am looking for descendants of my great grandmother, Emily Louisa HANLEY (aka Ludie or Lutie) who married Edward Virgil FARRAR in Saline County, MO in 1865. I believe she is the daughter of Archibald HANLEY, who is shown on the 1850 census in Saline co. with a wife Emily, and eight children, the youngest being listed as Louisa E. I want to believe this is really Emily Louisa (and they listed her name backwards!) at the age of 4 months. Other children in that family were: Samuel-age 15, Amanda-13, Ann-11, John-9, Elizabeth -6, Palmyra-4, and William-2. I believe there were three more children after the 1850 census since I have a copy of Archibald's will naming Lillie (who married A.R. MARSHALL), Robert Lee HANLEY) and Daisy HANLEY. There may have been one other child named Virgie (who married Henry MCDANIEL). However, I could have two Archibald HANLEY families mixed up. Can anyone help me? Does anyone have access to the 1860 0r 1870 census that could check this for me? Are there descendants out there researching? Emily Louisa (Ludie or Lutie) and Edward Virgil FARRAR were found on the 1880 census in Randolph County, MO but they were married in Saline Co.,which must have been the home of her parents at that time. I will gladly share my data with anyone who can help me. Archibald HANLEY was found on the 1840 census in Callaway county, MO.

I'm looking for any information on the surname SEE in Saline Co. Mo. specifically in and around Blackburn. My great, great grandfather William SEE moved there with family from somewhere in Kentucky around 1868. Wife- Mary Ann (THACKER). William died Feb. 28, 1881. Leaving wife and the following children: George Washington SEE born 6/16/1849; William Jefferson SEE born 3/1/1851, possibly died in a fire with wife); Sarah Ann SEE born 3/5/1858; Amerila Elizabeth SEE born 7/4/1860; Benjamin SEE born 10/26/1863; Amanda Jane SEE born 2/17/1867; Henry Jackson SEE born 11/22/1870 or 71. Henry was my great grandfather and should have been born in or around Blackburn. Married Elizabeth BUCY on 12/20/1890 in Linn Co. Mo. Children : Jesse Earl SEE born 8/9/1892; Bill SEE; Ethel SEE (died in childhood). All should have been born in or around Blackburn. Sometime after births moved to Iowa. Jesse was my grandfather and was a coal miner until his death in a Knoxville, Iowa coal mine. William, William J. and possibly Benjamin ran a general store and frieght business in or around Blackburn. I have one of the ledgers that belonged to them. It's my understanding that William also ran a store in Kentucky before their move to Blackburn. There is a possibility that they may have lived just over the county line in Lafayette Co. Any information, that you might have, would be greatly appreciated. I'm glad to know there is someone in Saline Co. to contact about genealogy.
